چکیده

A valued constraint satisfaction problem (VCSP) instance (V,Π, w) is a set of variables V with a set of constraints Π weighted by w. Given a VCSP instance, we are interested in a re-weighted sub-instance (V,Π′ ⊂ Π, w′) such that preserves the value of the given instance (under every assignment to the variables) within factor 1± . A well-studied special case is cut sparsification in graphs, which has found various applications. We show that a VCSP instance consisting of a single boolean predicate P (x, y) (e.g., for cut, P = XOR) can be sparsified into O(|V |/ ) constraints if and only if the number of inputs that satisfy P is anything but one (i.e., |P−1(1)| 6 = 1). Furthermore, this sparsity bound is tight unless P is a relatively trivial predicate. We conclude that also systems of 2SAT (or 2LIN) constraints can be sparsified.

Structural Symmetry Breaking

Symmetry breaking has been shown to be an important method to speed up the search in constraint satisfaction problems that contain symmetry. When breaking symmetry by dominance detection, a computationally efficient symmetry breaking scheme can be achieved if we can solve the dominance detection problem in polynomial time. We study the complexity of dominance detection when value and variable s...

Upper and Lower Bounds on the Time Complexity of Infinite-Domain CSPs

The constraint satisfaction problem (CSP) is a widely studied problem with numerous applications in computer science. For infinitedomain CSPs, there are many results separating tractable and NP-hard cases while upper bounds on the time complexity of hard cases are virtually unexplored. Hence, we initiate a study of the worst-case time complexity of such CSPs. We analyse backtracking algorithms ...

Semiring-Based CSPs and Valued CSPs: Basic Properties and Comparison

We introduce two frameworks for constraint solving where classical CSPs, fuzzy CSPs, weighted CSPs, partial constraint satisfaction , and others can be easily cast. One is based on a semiring, and the other one on a totally ordered commutative monoid. We then compare the two approaches and we discuss the relationship between them.

The complexity of general-valued CSPs seen from the other side

General-valued constraint satisfaction problems (VCSPs) are generalisations of CSPs dealing with homomorphisms between two valued structures. We study the complexity of structural restrictions for VCSPs, that is, restrictions defined by classes of admissible lefthand side valued structures. As our main result, we show that for VCSPs of bounded arity the only tractable structural restrictions ar...
